ROMANIAN DESIGN WEEK APPEARANCES

2017 // THREADS OF TRADITION @ VIENNA DESIGN WEEK // Romanian Design Week 2017 Shepard’s Tool by Dragoș Motica
This year’s RDW aimed to reinterpret the shepherd’s stool to highlight the importance of the dialogue between traditional crafts and contemporary design. The shepherd’s stool has been chosen as it is an iconic object, especially in the Wallachia area, an easily recognizable element, present in most of the fairs and in workshops for manually labored wooden parts in the rural areas. Dragoș Motica, the designer to whom the project has been commissioned, intended his intervention to be as minimally perceptible as possible, in order not to alter this iconic image. He worked together with specialized craftspeople and used the same aesthetics and the same materials his intervention being only at a functional and structural level. Functionally, by proposing to enlarging the stools family with one destined for the bar and structurally by finding a technical solution to make it dismantling friendly which meant to incorporate hidden elements in its seat to easily allow screwing and unscrewing.

Storied” talks about personal stories gathered under the same urban roof, shared over the table.
The set of handmade placemats is a reinterpretation of the traditional Romanian “ștergar”, using the same craft and local materials with a design inspired by the socialist architecture of Bucharest. Urban stories are always layered, much like a multi-storied concrete building; both soft and hard issues are brought to the table by close gatherings. Intimate or open, table gatherings are a concrete means of showing affection through food and conversation.

Ferma collection is an analogy to one of the oldest instruments that has helped humans to fetch water, the bucket. The handle of the bucket seemed to be the most recognizable element of the object, so its integration in the overall design reveals where the inspiration was drawn from.

Vulcano gives us the privileged position of Gulliver, as observer and admirer of a pocket-sized nature. Vulcano series consists in three products, differentiated by size and color. Like nature, the objects need to be explored, so that the user can discover that two of the candle holders have a secondary function, that of small flower vases. The holders come with custom candles, but are also suited for standard sized tea candles and candle sticks.

Reducing its dimensions till the design becomes a poetic simplification of lighting, the lamp provides a direct and efficient LED light emission, which can be turned on or off by simply moving the metal ball onto the right port.
