HISTORY
Born in 1986 in Cluj-Napoca and graduated from the University of Art and Design Cluj-Napoca with a degree in design, Mihai Manescu is an upcoming illustrator mainly focused on intricately carved poster artworks relevant to the music industry and cinematography as well. Music represents for the artist the primordial ocean that is the source of all the elements and concepts used in the artistic process. The twisted representations of the world around us are mixed with occult and often mystic elements to convey the desired message or set a specific tone.

ROMANIAN DESIGN WEEK APPEARANCES

2017 // Consume The Sun - “Holy Poison” - album project
Consume The Sun is a death metal band from Westchester, US. From the collaboration with Mihai Manescu on their upcoming “Holy Poison” EP, resulted a large project containing at the end a branding with a fresh new logo and full album artwork, but also merchandise with poster artwork prints and t-shirts. The album concept artwork is related with one of the posters included in the package, presenting a larger and more detailed view of the imprisoned Vitruvian ecorche in the ghoulish machinery of dissection for consuming souls. The machinery is also presented in it's full scale on one of the other poster artworks from the merchandise package. Inspired by the human anatomy from the Renaissance period and the dissections of Dr. Gunter von Hagens, the artist imagined that the human mind is an infinite universe where the Sun represents the soul and for that creating a connection with the past beliefs where the Man and Sun were standing in the center of the Universe.

2017 // Albatross overdrive - “Earth Mother” - album EP project
Albatross Overdrive is a Californian stoner-rock band from Huntington Beach, US. The collaboration with Mihai Manescu began with an initial commission for an EP album artwork based on one of their 2016 song release called “Earth Mother”.
The idea and symbolism behind the artwork has a connection with northwest Native American legends and tales and the way they perceive the raven as the bringer of light. In fact, southwestern tribes (Hopi, Navajo, Zuni) felt the raven has flown out from the dark womb of the Cosmos and with it brought the light of the sun (dawning of understanding). Consequently, the raven is considered a venerated bird of creation, for without the raven, humans would forever live in darkness. Foremost, the Raven is the Native American bearer of magic, and a harbinger of messages from the Cosmos.
The artist used the raven as a main symbol in this artwork and accompanied it with the tree of life, with it's Kabbalistic symbol that holds the Cosmos, willing to convey the message of perpetual transformation, the repetitive cycle of growth and decay, of life and death.

2016 //
No Good Advice – band artwork
“No Good Advice” is a stoner rock band from Torino, Italy. This poster illustration resulted from the collaboration with Mihai Mănescu and its main purpose is to serve the band as a promotional poster and also as a design for their official T-shirts. The artwork is inspired by the band’s new album that is set to be realeased next year and it is in close relation with the album design.

2016 // The Court of Owls – band artwork
“The Court of Owls” is an illustration based on one of the tracks from the album “In No Man’s Memory” of the Italian band “Proliferhate”. Based on the song that is also titled “The Court of Owls” the artist came up with this central concept of an allegorical representation of the Inquisition and the atrocities it has committed. The present illustration was designed to serve as a promotional poster for the band, as well as a design for the official band T-shirts.

2016 // The Waking Sea – band artwork
For the concept of this artwork created for the band “The Waking Sea”(US), the artist extracted the key words from the “Cetacen” album’s lyrics and used them together with other ideas that surfaced in the dialogues with the band members, in order to create a representative and well defined illustration.
