History
In 2014, Robert Savu and Dragoș Motica founded Ubikubi, driven by the firm belief that Romanian design can be an important reference for authentic, high-quality design. They aim to create impeccably executed objects that gradually shape a clear identity for Romanian design. Smart design, natural materials and sustainability care are part of the brand’s DNA.

Specific
Ubikubi now reunites a team of 12 hand-picked Romanian designers and architects who developed a wonderfully diverse collection of over 80 objects. From the smallest home accessories to exquisite lighting and furniture, everything is produced in Romania and stands out through a voice of its own.

ROMANIAN DESIGN WEEK APPEARANCES

2019 // +/- plus minus, by Ana Porim & Iarina Tavă

Modular, flexible, simple. +/- (plusminus) is an acoustic room divider for the office space and home. Modules can be arranged together with the help of wood parts. It can be arranged in many different ways and so can easily be adapted to needs and space. The new configuration can be used to create a private space at the desk or to separate within a room. The module is made from PET Felt shaped through compression molding and are available in choices of color and dimension. At the same time, accessories can make the dividers helpful in any kind of space.

2019 // O Lamp by Dragoș Motica
The object consists of a black marble cylinder and a painted aluminum reflective surface. The marble part shelters a tea candle light whose light is indirectly projected by the white vertical surface, generating a diffused ambient light. By the proposed form, the light source is hidden from the eyes of the user, using the principle of smoke or light without fire. The light generated in this way is more intimate, creating a quiet atmosphere, a moment of respite in modern-day space. Symbolically, the object is a dissociation of the cause cause.

2018 // 1989 by Dragoș Motica

In 1989, Romania changed from a communist society into a society aiming for capitalism. This was reflected in the local product design. By the end of 1989, in Romania, any object of "design", no matter if it was an object of furniture or a household object, became iconic through the lack of alternatives. Today, the definition of an iconic object refers to the ubiquity of that product. 1989 is inspired by the iconic returnable bottle of milk from the communist times. Through a change of function, the bottle of milk became a water carafe, accompanied by a glass.

Drinking water from a carafe has more to do with the pleasure of the gesture and with having better control over the amount of water we drink than it has to do with the need itself. We tried to improve the bottle from an ergonomic perspective by making the neck of the bottle longer, making it easier to handle without altering too much the "iconic" shape. The engraved horizontal lines mark the amount of water in the recipients.

2018 // Chipped - Set of plates by Dragoș Motica
Chipped is a set of plates made up of three recipients: bowl, appetizer plate and large plate. The shapes are round, minimal. The name of the product comes from the small incision on the edge of each plate, designed to support cutlery pieces. This functional detail transforms the object from a linear product into a product that ignites curiosity.

2018 // Compose - Shelving system by 201 Design Studio designers
Compose is a shelving system adaptable and suited for any environment where there is need for storage, be it an office, home or commercial spaces.
Drawing inspiration from the shelves used in industrial storage this system offers modularity in vertical and horizontal directions, giving freedom of choosing from sixteen types of shelves, various vertical dimensions and color combinations.
Imagination is the only limit to the variety and range of products that can be achieved with Compose.

2018 // Folding chair by Dragoș Motica
Folding chair is a chair with detachable handles that proposes a daring and elegant interpretation of the classic folding chair, often perceived as a backup solution, not as an essential furniture piece in a home or an object meant to catch the eye through its aspect.

Simple aesthetics and lightweight structure are attributes that make this chair a versatile object that fits easily into any room in a home. Even if it’s extremely easy to carry it and to store it, Folding chair is designed to function as a primary piece in a decor, not as a secondary piece, ready to be hidden anytime in the storage room.

The lines of the seat, of the backrest and of the handles subtly follow the lines of the human body, supporting the lumbar region and ensuring a comfortable position. Folding chair is made of ash wood, a material that ensures elegance is durable and offers a lot of visual freedom in decorating a space.

2018 // CM3 Sofa by Dragoș Motica
Made of 4 types of modules, Unite offers a modular system of armchairs and sofas which allows multiple configurations. By combining standardized elements, a wide array of new configurations can be created.

2017 // THREADS OF TRADITION @ VIENNA DESIGN WEEK // Romanian Design Week 2017 Shepard’s Tool by Dragoș Motica
This year’s RDW aimed to reinterpret the shepherd’s stool to highlight the importance of the dialogue between traditional crafts and contemporary design. The shepherd’s stool has been chosen as it is an iconic object, especially in the Wallachia area, an easily recognizable element, present in most of the fairs and in workshops for manually labored wooden parts in the rural areas. Dragoș Motica, the designer to whom the project has been commissioned, intended his intervention to be as minimally perceptible as possible, in order not to alter this iconic image. He worked together with specialized craftspeople and used the same aesthetics and the same materials his intervention being only at a functional and structural level. Functionally, by proposing to enlarging the stools family with one destined for the bar and structurally by finding a technical solution to make it dismantling friendly which meant to incorporate hidden elements in its seat to easily allow screwing and unscrewing.

Storied” talks about personal stories gathered under the same urban roof, shared over the table.
The set of handmade placemats is a reinterpretation of the traditional Romanian “ștergar”, using the same craft and local materials with a design inspired by the socialist architecture of Bucharest. Urban stories are always layered, much like a multi-storied concrete building; both soft and hard issues are brought to the table by close gatherings. Intimate or open, table gatherings are a concrete means of showing affection through food and conversation.

2017 // FERMA
Ferma collection is an analogy to one of the oldest instruments that has helped humans to fetch water, the bucket. The handle of the bucket seemed to be the most recognizable element of the object, so its integration in the overall design reveals where the inspiration was drawn from.

2017 // GONG
Gong is an intriguing table lamp that was awarded first place in the first edition of Ubikubi Young Designers Award. The object is an exploration of the principle of causality, which states that one element (the cause) under specific conditions, can give rise to something else (the effect).

Using two structurally identical modules for the seat and the backrest that can be chosen in different finishes, the customer can make a personal combination. Easily transportable, adaptable and comfortable.

2016 // JOHN CRUSHER COLLECTION
Luna is a grinder family that started out as a form study around the grinding process of salt and pepper, which should integrate naturally in your dining and kitchen environment. It combines two great durable materials, Oak and Ceramic in a minimal clean shape that defines perfect mix between function and aesthetics. The ceramic knob which has a stripe pattern for a better grip and the Oak solid body that it’s easy to hold with a correct weight balance intends to create an experience which just feels right for your hands.

2016 // VULCANO BY ANA FETCU
Vulcano is a playful, but very suggestive interpretation of the dynamics and beauty of unleashed nature. Lava gains aesthetic meanings and transforms the "mountain" layer after layer. Vulcano gives us the privileged position of Gulliver, as observer and admirer of a pocket-sized nature. Vulcano series consists in three products, differentiated by size and color.

Like nature, the objects need to be explored, so that the user can discover that two of the candle holders have a secondary function, that of small flower vases. The holders come with custom candles, but are also suited for standard sized tea candles and candle sticks.

2016 // PENGUIN BY DRAGOȘ MOTICA
Penguin is a simple, yet atypical carafe made of thick glass and a cork stopper. It has a square shape with unexpected but pleasing curves, one at the bottom, for a more effortless pouring, and two other convex curves for a better grip. It holds one liter.

2016 // N LAMP BY DRAGOȘ MOTICA
Nowadays, there is a huge amount of information that wraps us up and somehow we need to clear our minds and spaces we live in by minimizing things around us the most we can. Reducing its dimensions till the design becomes a poetic simplification of lighting, the lamp provides a direct and efficient LED light emission, which can be turned on or off by simply moving the metal ball onto the right port. Its base and counterbalance are made of marble, while its leg and upper moving arm are made of powder-coated metal.

2016 // TAKE A BOW BY DRAGOȘ MOTICA
There are a lot of theories that have been told on who invented the light bulb. Was it Edison, Davy or Swan? We may never know the exact truth. However, Ubikubi managed to create the Take a Bow table lamp, as a homage to those who squeezed their brains on creating an efficient lighting method for our brighter future. The lamp is made of terracotta and diffuses a warm light.
