Ivan Patzaichin is honored through Delta lui Ivan, a triptych that continues his vision and work: the memorial ensemble in Tulcea, the Ivan Patzaichin Museum in Mila 23, and the route that connects them like a vast water bridge.
One of the themes that consistently concerned Patzaichin was the impact that mobility in the Delta has on people’s well-being. Transport solutions adapted to the specific context of the area, together with a balanced approach to tourism, can lead to a healthier Delta, with more prosperous communities and visitors more engaged with the diversity of the place.
Tulcea and the Danube Delta need new forms of cultural tourism, slow tourism, and ecotourism. The ensemble aims to become an essential element in this process, contributing to transforming the region into a must-visit destination, encouraging exploration and walking journeys.
Because, paraphrasing Patzaichin, the most beautiful walks are those on water—moving together with nature, fish, and birds.
Asociația Ivan Patzaichin – Mila 23 aims to support local development in the Danube Delta and other natural regions of Romania by protecting the cultural and natural biodiversity of water-based landscapes.
Its work promotes Romania’s hydrological heritage, brings local traditions back into contemporary relevance, and highlights both the cultural and natural identity of the Danube Delta, while encouraging healthier lifestyles.
The association also develops social entrepreneurship programs grounded in public consultation processes designed to identify development directions that are best received by the communities they address. It uses public communication tools to foster critical thinking, participation, and collaboration.
Ivan Patzaichin Memorial Ensemble is a collaborative memorial work created by five contemporary artists under the curatorial coordination of Teodor Frolu, partner of Ivan Patzaichin within Asociația Ivan Patzaichin – Mila 23.
Located on the waterfront of Tulcea, the ensemble is envisioned as a landmark for the city—a gateway to the Danube Delta—combining aesthetic, cultural, and historical value with the potential to contribute to urban regeneration, cultural heritage enrichment, and sustainable development.
The memorial was created by artists Mircea Cantor, Virgil Scripcariu, Teodor Graur, Dan Vezentan, and Oláh Gyárfás, together with landscape architect Nicolas Triboi.
Strategically placed at the far end of the promenade toward Sulina, near the Tulcea Art Museum, the ensemble also serves a functional role as a starting point for exploring the Delta. From here, lightweight boats set out toward the Delta for those who wish to discover the area at a paddling pace, in harmony with Patzaichin’s lifelong passion for water and nature.
Ivan Patzaichin Museum – Community Innovation Center redefines the concept of a museum by integrating it into a modern cultural center, becoming an essential pillar in the development of the local community.
Functioning as a platform dedicated to celebrating the achievements and concerns of Ivan Patzaichin, the museum provides a framework for showcasing the culture and traditions of the Lipovan community in Mila 23 and for highlighting the fragile biodiversity of the Danube Delta.
Visitors can explore key moments from Patzaichin’s life, discover the history of the village of Mila 23, the community’s contributions to rowing sports, and connect with the cultural and natural heritage of the Delta.
Slow tourism routes using rowing boats and electric vessels connect the Ivan Patzaichin Memorial Ensemble with the Ivan Patzaichin Museum – Community Innovation Center, as well as other cultural and natural attractions in the Danube Delta.
This network has developed into an alternative model of responsible tourism, whose first component is the approximately 52 km water route between Tulcea and Mila 23. It represents the first step toward building a complete infrastructure for visiting the Delta using ecological vessels.
"Inspired by Ivan Patzaichin and his innate connection with water, the Delta, and the boat, we began a heartfelt partnership. This is how Asociația Ivan Patzaichin – Mila 23 was born—out of a love for nature and the Delta, and from a shared vision that respect for tradition and for the people of the Delta can generate smart solutions for modernizing this place."
"(Ivan) He entrusted us with the beautiful story he had begun. He offered it to us with trust—to protect it and grow it, working the way we worked with him: as a team, with integrity, tenacity, and loyalty, keeping our word, valuing each collaborator’s talent, with love for nature, water, the Delta, and people. It is a mandate rooted in a set of values that will outlive time."
