HISTORY
Fabrik is a multidisciplinary printing house based in Bucharest, a place where traditional printing and finishing techniques intertwine with today's technology. Machines that stood the test of time and people who understand that this craft is done in silence, with precision, respect and attention to details, turn ideas into art objects.

ROMANIAN DESIGN WEEK APPEARANCES

2018 // 4m3
“Artists Valentin Cernat and Mihai Șovăială, representing a generation that has not experienced communism firsthand, tasked themselves with encountering the people and the memory of this history (…). As an attempt to know and understand, with instruments bordering on art and visual anthropology, the project opened with a field research in which the two documented the Constanța – Cernavodă – Poarta Albă area, travelling by foot on monotonous, deserted, dusty roads, querying locals, inventorying communist relics: monuments, narratives, abandoned buildings.

The two have later performed on the shore, close to the former Poarta Albă colony a reenactment of the daily work ritual imposed to the prisoners of the Canal: the digging of a four cubic meters hole.” (Raluca Nestor (Oancea), afterword the book, “Art as Liberating Technique in the Age of Docile Bodies”)

2018 // Absența dovezii
We bump into things we did not know they exist. We thought that we are alone and we have seen it all, we realize pretty fast that we’re wrong. Now we are surrounded by strangers, discomfiture, stray dogs and friends we never had. We were blind but now we can see. This project depicts the things we cannot see, though they exist and, without our knowledge, influence us; things which have been there the whole time. It talks about perception and how we relate to everything that surrounds us.

Something can take shape only if you give it shape, if you put a finger on it; else, it could be anything. Although, what happens when pointing out something but not knowing what it represents? Or whatever is going on when you do not even acknowledge its existence?
Maybe you can see it, but even if not, this does not mean it isn’t there. Disoriented, you alter every form you grab, not realizing which is which and what surrounds you. In consequence, a system of illusions is born; a system of uncertainty.

2018// Calea București
"Calea București" is a book containing a series of 78 black and white images, arranged in a non-narrative, single image per full-spread sequence meant to question one`s own sense of belonging.
The images are made in Romania, Switzerland and other western European locations, they do not always reveal their respective setting, but share a common visual language. The context of the series is my social and economic background in Romania at the time and my voluntary relocation to Zürich.
The title, "Calea București" translates to "Bucharest Avenue" which is the street I had grown up on in Brasov, a mid-sized city in the Carpathian Mountains, and moved out of to pursue an art education in Bucharest. While the title obviously referrences my apparent sense of belonging for the city of Bucharest it is also meant to suggest the recurring state of unease in one's perception of place.
