This year, Romanian Design Week embraces an international dimension, meant to emphasize Romanian Design community and to add a new layer to the educational component of the project.

The Netherlands is the guest country of Romanian Design Week 2015, due to the support of The  Netherlands Embassy in Bucharest. The Netherlands will be represented by exhibitions and workshops held by a mix of dutch designers and companies at Hanul Gabroveni, but also in different locations throughout Bucharest. This year’s program welcomes the participation of 5 more European countries : Austria, Czech Republic, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. These last three countries will sign a common project, entitled Nordic Corner, exhibited at Hanul Gabroveni.  In addition, the foreign guests will be holding conferences, debates or even projects during the 10 days period of the event.

At Gabroveni Inn:
Dutch Design Awards
The best of Dutch Design is an exhibition starting the winners of Dutch Design Awards: Dave Hakkens (winner ‘Young Designer Award’), Liselore Frowijn and Niels Hoebers. Since 2003 Dutch Design Awards (DDA) annually shows and rewards the very best in the field of Dutch design in different categories: Product, Communication, Habitat, Service&Systems, Design Research and Fashion. The criteria for nomination are: impact, innovation, production process, aesthetics and collaboration, but the decisive factor in the judgement is the extent to which the design is innovative and/or makes a relevant contribution to society.

as if - interpreting Vienna
This year’s VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Embassy is showcasing itself with a selection of Austrian design objects that will be subject to a fresh interpretation. The objects acting as template for a new interpretation are themselves not visible at the beginning, but merely described verbally by their designers. Launching out from this “briefing”, new objects are designed and produced in workshops using available tools and specified materials. When the interpretation is ready, the original object will also be visible. Original and interpretation are displayed next to each other.

“By the clicking an eye”//Installation: Ondřej Vicena
Borrowed copies of black and white negatives of Josef Sudek´s work from the archives of the Institute of Art History Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic are the primary basis for the  installation made by Ondřej Vicena, that features images that capture utilitarian objects and direct imprint of the original glass negatives of Sudek’s estate. The composition expresses speed, repeating motifs, machine production, faith into technological progress and talkes about  abstract constructivist ideas of the early 20th century.

„Nordic Feel” intends to bring and recreate the ahmosphere of a functional, beautiful and authentic Nordic living room. Denmark and Finland share a very rich design culture and  chosed well-known representative design products for a better living in order to create this experience for the RDW’s audience. Furniture and design decorative objects, lighting and sound from the Danish companies BoConcept, Bang&Olufson and Iittala from Finland will all build the feel of a Nordic living-room.

Glimpt of Romania
The exhibition is showing Swedish design duo Glimpts latest work with Roma craftsmen in Transylvania, developed together with and for Mesteshukar ButiQ in Romania. Glimpt works internationally together with craftsmen to develop new products inspired by the artisans. Often inspired by a technique, material, a color combination or a pattern, something more contemporary is created and the work of the artisan is set in a new context.

Emerging tendencies in Scandinavian design
Curator:  Petra Lilja for the Swedish Embassy and the Finnish Embassy in Bucharest
The exhibition shows a number of examples of contemporary design from different areas and focuses on three strong tendencies:  designers who work with small-scale or artisanal production, designers who work conceptually rather than commercially and designers merging social commentary with design and art. The selection favors young as well as established designers from Sweden and Finland rather than big design brands or producers, and it aims at showing a slice of emerging tendencies in contemporary Scandinavian design. Curator and designer Petra Lilja will give a lecture about the exhibition and participate in a moderated talk.
