HISTORY
For 19 years Cărturești has been challenging the expectations we have of bookstores in Romania. Although this is the category it usually falls under, Cărturești is less of a bookstore and more of a 'cool curator' and a 'cultural venue' displaying not only books but also music, films, tea, art exhibitions and cultural projects - all carefully selected and mixed.

ROMANIAN DESIGN WEEK APPEARANCES

2019 // Bookstore Shopping Bag: I know you from Cărturești
The shopping bag I KNOW YOU FROM CĂRTUREȘTI marks a new collaboration between Cărturești and designer and illustrator Kadna. The purpose of the project was to transform an ordinary item of the shopping experience into an easily recognizable landmark for those who are part of the Cărturești community. The bag is covered with different characters from Cărturești pictured in vibrant colors and fresh patterns.

2016 // Cărturești Gift Wrapping Paper
The gift wrapping paper available in Cărturești represents a new step in the brand’s collaboration with young Romanian illustrators. This project aims at bringing the Romanian illustration closer to its audience by using it in familiar contexts. Two new lovely patterns were designed by Paula Rusu and Ioana Șopov for the winter of 2015.

2016 // I love Bucharest T-shirts
I Love Bucharest is the newest project generated by ROD in collaboration with some of the best Romanian designers or illustrators. Ioana Șopov, Paula Rusu, Alexe Popescu, George Roșu and Pisica Pătrată are the first artists to answer our call for creating new symbols of Bucharest to be worn on an exclusive line of t-shirts, promoting the city’s vibrant spirit.

2015 // Cărturești Gift Wrapping Paper
The gift wrapping paper available in Cărturești represents a new step in the brand’s collaboration with young Romanian illustrators. This project aims at bringing the Romanian illustration closer to its audience by using it in familiar contexts. Seven new lovely patterns were designed by Iulia Burlac, Alexandra Gavrilă, Raluca Ioana Piscu and Flavius Veliciu.

2015 // Mofturi Collection
Mofturi is a project concerned with the little things in our lives: trinkets that can put a smile on our face; simple every day objects made better through design; stuff that we don’t necessary need but help us define our own style. The bookbags and Tshirts included in the collection so far were designed by Bogdan Ceaușescu, graphic designer.

2015 // Cărturești Bookmarks
Cărturești Bookmarks are a way of remembering the great designs used to illustrate the bookstore’s promotional campaigns. Older artworks commissioned for various campaigns were adjusted and printed as bookmarks and then made available to clients who could take them and use them in their books. The readers’ response was overwhelmingly positive. More than 10 bookmark designs are available now in Cărturești and they were created by Maria Surducan, Flavius Veliciu and George Roșu.

2015 // Cărturești/ROD Bookbag by Pisica Pătrată
The bookbag designed by Alexandru Ciubotariu/Pisica Pătrată for Cărturești had a simple brief: how do you represent all the little things that make up Cărturești in a single drawing? This product is part of a bigger project that aims at bringing Romanian illustration closer to the public by showing it on everyday objects.

2015 // Cărturești Bookbags and notebooks by Ghica Popa
This new series of Cărturești bookbags and notebooks is a meeting point for Pinocchio, Don Quijote, Little Red Riding Hood and other characters rendered in the unique style of Ghica Popa, a blend of humour and robotics. The collection’s goal was to show a new perspective on famous literary characters and to bring them closer to the readers by printing them on everyday objects.

2015 // Literary Postcards from Cărturești
Literary postcards is a project started by Cărturești in the summer of 2014. The question that inspired it was: "What if you could send a postcard from a place in the story that you are reading?: The readers could choose from 4 destinations illustrated by Ileana and Maria Surducan: Wonderland, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Medeleni and Narnia.
